These days "Open Source" has become a buzz word on Internet.

In a whole concept, "Open source" is a symbol of teamwork and creativity. What does it mean, though, and why should newcomers and students pay attention? Let's try to learn!

馃搶Meaning of Open Source

"Open source" refers to a type of software or project that is released with a license that allows anyone to view, use, modify, and distribute its source code freely.

This open access to the source code encourages collaboration, transparency, and community-driven development.

  1. Free Redistribution: It is Free and Easy sharing of big code files with anyone and allowing them to use, share and download it.

  2. Collaboration: Open source projects often encourage collaboration among developers. It promotes teamwork, communication skills and a sense of belonging.

  3. Improvement in Code Base: The open nature of the code allows a global community of developers to contribute to the project by fixing bugs, adding features, and making improvements.

  4. Helping others: Open Source allows us to help other coders with our code, and being connected to giving back to community.

馃搶What is Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest is a 1 month-long challenge which happens in the month of October every year.

Everyone is welcome to attend Hacktoberfest, which celebrates open source. The largest Open Source event promotes newcomers' involvement in Open Source and helps them write their first substantive PR. By completing pull requests, taking part in activities, and contributing to open-source projects, Hacktoberfest promotes participation in giving back to the open-source community. It is also encouraged for people of all backgrounds and skill levels to complete the challenge.

馃搶How to participate?

By taking the following actions, you can take part in Hacktoberfest with ease:

  1. Visit the website: https://hacktoberfest.com/

  2. In the right corner of the page, select the "Start Hacking" button.

  3. Select the method for authorization, And go with the option "Authorize with GitHub".

  1. Following your GitHub account's authorization, you will see the information below. Make sure you're using legitimate login information to access your GitHub account at https://github.com.

  2. Scroll down and select the valid options for the self-identification process.

  3. To participate, provide accurate information and agree to the terms and conditions. Click the "Register" button in the bottom left after finishing.
